Context 19
At Context 19, (taking place October 6-8, 2006, here in Columbus, OH) we're going to have expanded writing workshop programming.

Charles Coleman Finlay, Tobias Buckell, and Paul Melko, who directed last year's enthusiastically-received workshop, are back on board to lead the Mega Writing Workshop. Up to 24 participants will be able to submit short manuscripts for professional critique and participate in this workshop, which will run 6-8 hours total over two days. The cost for the Mega workshop is $65, but this includes full weekend convention registration.

Please note that the workshop requires internet access, since manucripts will be submitted and initial discussions will be held online. The in-person workshop will ensure that every member has a small-group (3-4 person) session with one of the pros.

There will also be shorter Mini Writing Workshops offered on specific subjects. They cost $10, not counting convention registration. These workshops require no advance preparation on the part of participants and will run 1.5 to 2 hours each:

  • Gary A. Braunbeck: Creating Character and Dialog (Sunday)
  • Diana Botsford: Screenwriting (Saturday)
  • Rosemary Laurey: Writing SF/F/H-Flavored Romance (Friday night)
  • Tim Waggoner: Writing Media Tie-Ins (Saturday)
You will need to be registered for the convention if you wish to take any of the Mini Workshops; you may get a single-day registration in lieu of a full weekend registration. None of the workshop sessions will overlap, so you can sign up for the Mega Workshop and all of the Minis if you desire.

Participants should be 18 or older.

So why am I telling you about something that's 6 months off?

Because in addition to the writing workshop sessions, the science symposium, and the regular sorts of con programming, the convention will feature Saturday luncheons with author Maureen McHugh and editor Ellen Datlow.

There are only 7 spots open in each luncheon, so if you'd like to have lunch with either guest of honor, you might want to register very soon.

You can sign up using our online registration form.

There's also an LJ community for Context over at [info]contextsf; right now we've got a call for programming ideas as well as a place to post room/ride offers.

Cool, I might have to check this out since it is not that far from Indianapolis.

As much as I want to participate I don't have anything ready for the Mega-writing workshop..

So I have to weigh attendance based on if I think I can hit that mark:)

There's always Gary Braunbeck's characterization and dialog workshop, which I guarantee will be excellent.

And actually, now that I've checked out your profile, I bet you would really enjoy Tim Waggoner's workshop as well ... he's a wonderful instructor and really knows his stuff.

Sounds like I'd want to do both. Luckily they are on different days.. hmm - time to pull out the checkbook I think.
