Well, I've finished my first week at the new job. All the people there are really nice, and so far I like it there, though I'm already behind on assignments, partly due to the icky, no-good cold I had all week (and which today is threatening to become a sinus infection) and partly due to the newness of everything. Moving in as webmaster to a site that's already fully underway and which is being worked on piecemeal by over a dozen people is sort of like moving into somebody else's fully-furnished, lived-in-and-not-cleaned house. Nice place, great kitchen. You know how to run a house ... but what's with the furnace? Does it just make funny noises, or do you need to call a repairman? The gent who knows won't be in 'til Thursday. And what about this food in the fridge? Is it safe to eat? Is the dirty laundry safe to machine wash (who cut off all the garment labels, anyway)? And they left behind a menagerie of exotic pets and plants and no notes about feeding or special needs and so you gotta sort that out. The lawn really needs mowing and weeding or the neighbors are gonna complain but you're really worried about the caged birds which are looking rather sick....
You get the idea. A lot to sort and process, a lot of new people to get to know. I was asked to cut the lawn and trim the hedges, but got caught up researching parrot diseases, as it were.
In the meantime, the Strange Horizons anthology is now available for order from Lethe Press! Yay! I've been looking forward to that coming out for quite a while now. For all of you who've been hearing good things about SH but can't bear reading stories onscreen ... now's your chance to read all the cool stuff you've missed :-)
Go buy it! It'll be awesome! You'll be helping to support the coolest damn free science fiction publication around!
